Jesus Christ didn't die just in case we needed a savior. The awful truth is everyone needed to be saved from their sins; if there was no savior we would all be paying for our own sins in hell. (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9) We needed a savior, so the One True God became our Savior. (1Timothy 4:10) What if Jesus was not our Savior?

Is it not I, the LORD? And there is no other God besides Me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none except Me. Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth ...But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by ... renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Isaiah 45:21-22; Titus 3:4-7 NASB®

The name of Jesus means savior. The word savior means to deliver, to save, to get help, to defend. The angel told Joseph, Mary's husband, in a dream to name the Child that was conceived by the Holy Spirit, Jesus. This is because He will save His people from their sins. Jesus is called Immanuel, because He is the One True God, Who became flesh to be with us. (Isaiah 7:14, 9:6)

...an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph...do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: "BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which translated means, "GOD WITH US." And Joseph...did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus. Matthew 1:18-25 NASB®

God wants to save you from your sins, but He also wants to deliver, defend, and help you. (Psalm 91) When your well-being is being threatened, or possibly your very life, God is there to defend you. If you are struggling with a job, or perhaps your finances, God wants to help you. Maybe you are feeling overwhelmed or anxious from emotional or physical struggles, then go to God, He wants to deliver you. God your Savior is waiting for you to call upon Him! (Psalm 7:1; Philippians 4:6-7)

Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? ...But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. Romans 8:34-37 NASB®

God is called, the LORD of hosts, or LORD Almighty, many times in the Old Testament. This name means deliverer too. It also has the idea of might, and power in it. God is our powerful King and warrior ready to deliver us, at the cost of His own life. (Zechariah 4:6)

It will become a sign and a witness to the LORD of hosts in the land of Egypt; for they will cry to the LORD because of oppressors, and He will send them a Savior and a Champion, and He will deliver them. Isaiah 19:20 NASB®

Life Application:

Read Psalm 91. God your deliverer is described in this Psalm. From this passage, describe how God delivers and protects us. Write down any other insights you have from reading this Psalm. When my son was in Iraq, I was constantly praying for him. God used Psalm 91 to reassure me He would deliver and defend my son from harm, and God did.

How does knowing God is your Savior impact your life? Take some time to thank Jesus for being your Savior.
