Our Savior

We needed a savior, so the One True God became our Savior (1 Timothy 4:10). Jesus Christ didn't die just in case we needed a savior. The awful truth is everyone needed to be saved from their sins; if there was no savior we would all be paying for our own sins in hell. The word savior means: a deliverer, preserver, one who saves from danger or destruction, and brings into a state of prosperity and happiness.

The One True God willingly put on flesh and blood, and as a result became our Savior, to deliver us from the all-consuming power, judgment, punishment and guilt of sin, and to give us His righteousness. God also brings prosperity and happiness through a never-ending relationship with Him, and the many promises inherited from Him. (Philippians 3:20-21). Is Jesus your Savior?

Is it not I, the LORD? And there is no other God besides Me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none except Me. Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth... / But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by ... renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Isaiah 45:21-22; Titus 3:4-7 NASB®

The name Jesus

The name Jesus means Savior. The angel told Joseph, Mary's husband, in a dream, to name the Child that was conceived by the Holy Spirit, "Jesus." This is because He will save His people from their sins.

...an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph...do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: "BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which translated means, "GOD WITH US." And Joseph...did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus. Matthew 1:18-25 NASB®

When Jesus' name is mentioned, many times there is a strong reaction. Most people recognize Jesus and countless others love Him, but some are put off by Him, or despise Him, and some refuse to believe He is Who He said He is - God. Yes, there is something about Jesus' name that brings a reaction like no other name does.

In Philippians chapter two we are told that Jesus' name is highly exalted above every name. God made the name "Jesus" to awaken our very heart and soul. (Philippians 2:9-11). I think you understand, this is because of Who Jesus is, and not just the name itself. What reaction do you have to Jesus' name?

Jesus the conqueror of sin

Jesus our Savior saves us from all sins. We don't sin in a vacuum. Every sin, either ours or someone else's, can affect us, others, and even our environment. Quite a bit of our suffering is caused by others sinning. So when you feel like no one cares if that person or that group is being malicious towards you, remember, Jesus sees it and cared so much, He died to deliver you from the world's evil (Galatians 1:3-4).

As our Savior, God didn't just save us from our sins, but He brings contentment and a victorious life to us. When your well-being is being threatened, or possibly your very life, God is there to save you (Psalm 3:3-8). If you are struggling with a job, or perhaps your finances, God will sustain you (Philippians 4:11-13). Maybe you are feeling miserable, overwhelmed or anxious from emotional or physical struggles, then go to God. He wants to support you (Philippians 4:5b-7).

...Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? ...But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. Romans 8:34-37 NASB®

Because of my Savior, Jesus, I have conquered my lack of self-confidence, and many more weaknesses and sins in my life. I can sincerely say He has helped me triumph over many of the things that held me back from being what I should be in Him. What has Jesus helped you conquer?

The LORD of hosts

God is called "the LORD of hosts" or "LORD Almighty" in the Old Testament. This name has the idea of a deliverer with might and power in it. God is our powerful King and warrior, Who rules the entire universe, yet He is ready to deliver us at the cost of His own life. (Zechariah 4:6).

It will become a sign and a witness to the LORD of hosts in the land of Egypt; for they will cry to the LORD because of oppressors, and He will send them a Savior and a Champion, and He will deliver them. Isaiah 19:20 NASB®

What does it mean to you that the One True God is the LORD of Hosts, your mighty deliverer?

Immanuel

Immanuel is a name of Jesus. Do you remember what the name Immanuel means? Jesus is called Immanuel, because He is the One True God, Who became flesh to literally be with us (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23). God taking on flesh to be with me certainly makes me feel wanted. You too?

Life Application

Our Savior who delivers us

God your deliverer is described in Psalm ninety-one. Read Psalm 91. From this passage, describe how God delivers and protects us.

When my son was in Iraq, I was constantly praying for him. God used Psalm ninety-one to reassure me He would deliver and defend my son from harm, and God did.

What does it mean to you that the One True God is your Savior?

Take some time to thank Jesus for being your Savior.
